The Physiological Sigh: The Fastest Way to Calm Down (Backed by Stanford Research)

Stanford neuroscientist Andrew Huberman calls it the most effective real-time stress-relief tool available. It takes five seconds. Here's the science behind the physiological sigh and how to use it.

You've done it thousands of times without thinking about it. A long inhale followed by a big sniff on top, then a slow exhale. That's the physiological sigh — and new Stanford research shows it's the single most effective tool for reducing stress in real time.

What Is the Physiological Sigh?

The physiological sigh is a breathing pattern built into your biology. Your lungs contain tiny air sacs called alveoli that can collapse during periods of shallow breathing or high stress. Every 5 minutes or so, your brainstem automatically triggers a double-inhale-and-long-exhale to re-inflate them. You do it in your sleep. Animals do it too.

The technique is simple: breathe in through your nose, then take a second, shorter sniff on top — fully loading the lungs — then exhale slowly and completely through the mouth. One cycle. Done.

The Stanford Study

In 2023, a Stanford team led by Dr. David Spiegel and Dr. Andrew Huberman published a landmark study in Cell Reports Medicine. They compared five minutes of cyclic sighing (repeated physiological sighs) against mindfulness meditation and other breathwork patterns in 108 participants over four weeks.

The findings were striking: cyclic sighing produced the greatest improvements in mood, reduced anxiety the most, and lowered resting respiratory rate better than any other technique — including meditation. The effect was consistent and rapid.

Why the Double Inhale Works

The key is the long exhale. Your heart rate is controlled in part by the phrenic nerve and the vagus nerve. When you inhale, your diaphragm moves down, your heart has more space, it speeds up slightly. When you exhale, the opposite happens — your heart slows. A long exhale maximises this slowing effect, activating your parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nervous system.

The double inhale serves to fully inflate the lungs so the subsequent long exhale is possible. Think of it as loading a spring before releasing it slowly.

How to Do It: Step by Step

  1. Sit or stand comfortably. You can do this anywhere — at your desk, in traffic, before walking into a difficult meeting.
  2. Inhale through your nose. Take a full breath in.
  3. Sniff in again. Without exhaling, take a second, shorter sniff through the nose to top up your lungs completely.
  4. Exhale slowly through your mouth. Let all the air out in one long, slow, complete exhale. Don't rush it.
  5. Repeat 1–5 times. Even one cycle shifts your state. Five cycles gives a deeper reset.

When to Use It

  • Immediately before a stressful conversation, presentation, or interview
  • When you notice your heart racing or thoughts spiralling
  • After a conflict or difficult news
  • As a micro-reset between back-to-back meetings
  • In the middle of the night if you wake up anxious

Cyclic Sighing as a Practice

The Stanford study used five minutes of cyclic sighing — repeated physiological sighs one after another. This is what Huberman calls the "most powerful tool for real-time stress reduction." If you can spare five minutes, doing this as a daily practice produces cumulative benefits: lower baseline anxiety, improved mood, and better sleep.

Unlike meditation, it requires no particular mental focus or stillness. You just breathe.
